College: Hardy, Kingsbury GS wins pace Vermont to carnival crown

College: Hardy, Kingsbury GS wins pace Vermont to carnival crown{mosimage}Vermont sophomore Greg Hardy continued his dominance on the EISA circuit, winning the giant slalom to claim his fourth straight win.

Jamie Kingsbury also finished first in the GS to lead the Catamounts to their 31st Vermont Ski Carnival title in school history.

Competing at Stowe, Vermont, UVM started the day four points out of first place but won the team scores in both the men’s and women’s GS events to finish with 755 team points for the weekend, ahead of second-place Middlebury’s 742 points.

‘It was a great day and our men’s and women’s alpine team performed outstanding’ director of skiing and head alpine coach Bill Reichelt said. ‘On a day when there was some really tough conditions, our team stood up to the pressure and won our home carnival.’

The warm conditions forced the nordic relays scheduled for the morning to be canceled, but the alpine racing continued with the GS. Hardy led the way for the men’s alpine team once again. Senior tri-captain Paul Epstein followed up with his best performance of the year to finish in second place. David Chodounsky from Dartmouth rounded out the top three.

Vermont also took the top two spots in the women’s GS, with Kingsbury picking up her third first-place finish of the year. She also has finished in the top-three in all six of her races this season. Sophomore Jilyne McDonald finished second and Megan Hughes from Middlebury was third.

Vermont has won all three of its carnivals so far this season and returns to action next weekend at the Dartmouth Carnival starting on Friday, Feb. 10.
