Chinese top World Cup aerials podiums at home, Lindsey fourth

It was a new day but the results were much the same today (Dec. 20) in Changchun, China where the season’s second World Cup aerials competition took place after yesterday’s premier.

Once again, Chinese skiers grabbed five of six podium spots, but U.S. B-Team jumper Jana Lindsey came up big with a fourth-place finish, her best result ever on the World Cup.

Yesterday’s third-place finisher, Xu Mengtao took the women’s win followed by teammates Guo Xinxin (yesterda’s winner) in second and Zhang Xin in third for the all Chinese podium sweep.

Lindsey has been competing on the World Cup since 2002 but never managed to score higher than fifth.

Things looked good for the U.S. women in the early goings as Lindsey, Lacey Schnoor (ninth) and Emily Cook (12th) all qualified in the top seven, but poor execution led to Cook and Schnoor’s slips.

“We had some good opportunities as a whole but just didn’t execute,” said U.S. head freestyle coach Jeff Wintersteen. “We’re just not being aggressive enough and also need to work on landings.”

Canadian women Veronkica Bauer and Amber Peterson looked strong, finishing in sixth and seventh, respectively.

China’s Jia Zongyang,18, topped the men’s podium for the first World Cup podium of his young career (only four competitions).  His teammate Qi Guangpu took second followed by yesterday’s winner Belarus skier Anton Kushnir in third.

Canadian Steve Omischl again led the North Americans with his second fourth-place finish in two days.  Jeret “Speedy” Peterson was the top American in ninth place followed by teammates Dylan Ferguson in 14th and World Champion Ryan St Onge in 18th.

The U.S. skiers now head to Steamboat Springs, Colo. for Olympic Trials next week where one man and one woman will win early tickets to Vancouver on the U.S. Olympic team. The aerialists compete Thursday morning.
