MOUNT BACHELOR, Oregon — After failing to capitalize on her first-run lead in giant slalom one day earlier, East skier Julia Ford proved resilient on Thursday, seizing gold in the slalom at the Chevrolet J2 Junior Olympics.
Ford won the first run and held on in the second run to best silver medalist Erica Jacobson from the Western region by 1.4 seconds. Devin Delaney took bronze, giving the East two of the three podium placings.
The men’s race was another tight one. The Central Division's Michael Ankeny, from Buck Hill, won the second run by enough to take the victory over teammate Wiley Maple by four-tenths. Finishing third was Nick Daniels from Western region.
Racers encountered all kinds of weather — sun, overcast, snow, and a little rain. Mount Bachelor did a great job again providing a good racing surface considering what Mother Nature served up.
After the technical races, Rocky holds the regional lead with 79 points, followed by East with 71 and West with 70.
With approaching bad weather, the downhill has been moved from Saturday to Friday.
