SUN VALLEY, Idaho — The Canadian skicross team took control of Saturday's finals at the Jeep King of the Mountain/48 Straight season finale. Canada's Chris Del Bosco and Julia Murray both got their first wins, besting some of the world's top skicross athletes on Dollar Mountain, where thousands of fans cheered them on.
"It's just so wonderful to finally get a win," Del Bosco said. "My dad came out. I got my whole team here, the Canadian National Team and all the people who have got me this far. What a great day!"
Added the dumbstruck 19-year-old Murray: "I'm happy!"
The challenging course made for some neck-and-neck racing throughout the day. In the final heats, stormy weather moved in, adding to the variables. "It was flat light all day," said America's Casey Puckett, who was racing with a separated shoulder. "The corners come at you fast, and it has a lot of sketchy rollers. It's kind of scary."
With the bad shoulder, he couldn't get the quick starts he had hoped for and was knocked out of the semi finals. The newly crowned World Cup champion Tomas Kraus got picked off by Del Bosco in the final, surprising the crowd. Nonetheless, Kraus still won the overall Jeep King of the Mountain series and got to take home — to the Czech Republic — a new Jeep Liberty.
In the women's final, a crash between Jenny Owens and JKOM overall winner Magdalena Jonsson, allowed Murray to ski into the leader spot, and no one would be able to catch her.
