On Thursday, the Burke Mountain Academy (BMA) Board of Trustees accepted the resignation of Jory Macomber effective June 30, 2017 and voted to appoint Steve Berlack as interim head of school upon Macomber’s departure. Berlack will reprise his role as interim head, a position he previously held among other significant roles, during his 19-year tenure with BMA. Simultaneously, BMA’s Board of Trustees identified a strong leadership team to support Berlack’s management of all academic, athletic and community programming during the transition period.

Macomber cited personal reasons for his resignation.

“I will remain an active member of the BMA family and will be engaged throughout the transition process to support the school I love and where in addition to serving as Head, I served over 20 years as a trustee, attended as a student and visited often as a parent and loyal alum,” he explained.

Macomber and his wife Martha plan to return to Park City, Utah, where they lived prior to joining BMA.

“It is with sincere regret we accepted Jory’s resignation,” said BMA Board of Trustees Chair Willy Booker. “Jory made substantial contributions to BMA as Head of School. He managed the successful completion of the newly dedicated Ronnie Berlack Center (RBC), attained official designation for BMA as a U.S. Ski Team Development Site and High Performance Center and launched Burke Racing, LLC – a collaborative partnership with Burke Mountain to create an alpine training center for regional ski racing development at Burke, among other achievements.”

Berlack, a 19-year BMA veteran is proud to serve as BMA’s leadership team head and brings a wealth of experience to the position. A former successful tech entrepreneur and business owner,Berlack also served as a trustee and treasurer for BMA.Berlack is a Level 400 coach with Europa Cup and World Cup coaching experience and was named 2015 USSA Coach of the Year. In his most recent role as BMA’s men’s U16 coach, Berlack focused on the challenges facing adolescent athletic development in the U.S.

“I am honored and excited to continue the positive momentum Jory created,” Berlack said. “Change is always difficult, but it
also creates opportunities to test and implement new approaches to produce scholar athletes capable of elite level athletic and academic achievement.”

Assisting Berlack on the leadership team to deliver BMA’s strategic emphasis on academics, athletics and community will be current Academic Director Jon Rice, Tory Amorello, who will continue as admissions director, newly appointed Athletic
Program Director Bradley Wall, and 21-year BMA staff veteran and High Performance Director Darrell Gray, who will take lead responsibility for Community and Student Life during the transition period.

“The board is confident that Steve Berlack and his leadership team will not only deliver continuity to BMA’s student-athletes and staff on campus, but also capitalize on the new U.S. Ski Team partnership and other recent exciting initiatives to drive Burke Mountain Academy’s continuous pursuit of excellence during the transition period and into the future,” Booker said.
