ARE, Sweden — Poor weather and course conditions combined to postpone the women’s super G on Sunday at the World Championships, but colder and drier conditions in the forecast should allow racing to begin on Monday with the men's super G race.
After the men’s super G was postponed on Saturday, there was hope that a wind shift and the onset of colder temperatures would allow the women’s race to be run Sunday. But high winds at the top of the course made for whiteout conditions, and continued above-freezing temperatures near the bottom kept the track too slushy to be safe, according to World Cup women’s race director Atle Skaardal.
“The jury decision was unanimous” to postpone the event, Skaardal said Sunday morning in a press conference. “The plan now is to reschedule the race for Tuesday at 12:30 [local time]. I think we have a good chance.”
More than 350 workers and seven grooming machines were on-course early Sunday morning attempting to salvage racing. A lower starting point for the race was considered but winds were too strong there also to allow racing.
“It is an acceptable start to use, but I hope we don’t need to use it,” Skaardal said. “But it wasn’t enough for [Sunday]. Now we’re looking for a start on the top of the course on Tuesday.”
The schedule now calls for the men’s super G race on Monday at 12:30 p.m. local time (6:30 a.m. ET) followed by the women’s race Tuesday. A downhill training session for men is also scheduled for Tuesday.
However, if the men cannot race Monday, both super G events would be run Tuesday, likely a 10:30 a.m. local start for the men and a 12:30 p.m. start for the women.
The remainder of the week’s schedule, weather permitting, shows downhill training for both men and women on Wednesday, the men’s super combined and women’s downhill training Thursday and the women’s super combi on Friday.
FIS representative Sarah Lewis was asked if there was concern that continued poor weather could wipe out the championships altogether.
"Well it’s obviously concerning to all the parties, the organizing committee and FIS. But at this time we’re in a postponement phase," she said. "We still have quite some days not only this week but next. There has already been quite a bit of juggling this season due to lack of snow, and now it’s the alternative which is too much snow that causes problems, too."
