American moguls skiers take half the podium spots at home in Deer Valley duals

By Published On: February 3rd, 2013Comments Off on American moguls skiers take half the podium spots at home in Deer Valley duals

Just two days after three American women swept a World Cup podium, three more American moguls skiers were back on the same Deer Valley podium tonight (Feb. 2) in front of a huge home crowd. This time there was a little more balance between genders as two U.S. men and one woman grabbed half the medal spots in an exciting duals event.

It was a repeat performance for comeback kid Hannah Kearney (bouncing back from a preseason training injury), who returned to the top spot tonight after winning Thursday’s single moguls event for her third win of the season. Kearney endured five competitive runs down the demanding Champion course, none more intense than her final face off with  standings leader, Canadian Justine Duford-Lapointe. The two top contenders were neck and neck for most of the run until Duford-Lapointe misjudged a bump near the bottom jump and blew out.

“I was a little bit nervous to come back but as soon as it was time to ski duals I new I felt pretty confident,” said Kearney, who hadn’t competed in a duals competition since March. “I felt comfortable throughout – sometimes too comfortable. I probably should’ve been skiing faster, but there’s a really fine line between skiing too fast and too slow, and I think I found the right balance tonight. I focused on my form, which if you’re skiing well, it’s easier to ski fast.”

Kazakhstan’s Yulia Galysheva beat American KC Oakley (fourth) in the small final to take third place.

The men’s event saw an all North American podium lead by Canadian Olympic gold medalist Alex Bilodeau who just edged American Patrick Deneen in the final.

Fellow American Bradley Wilson rounded out the podium in third place to earn his first career World Cup podium on just his second season on the tour.

“I can’t even explain it,” said a widely smiling Wilson just after embracing his older brother, Olympic bronze medalist Byron Wilson. “It’s a dream come true to do it here at Deer Valley. I came in here needing to get a podium to qualify for World Championships. It’s just one of those things that you can’t really explain you know? You feel like you’re in the zone, you can’t really remember much and it’s a dream come true.”

Deneen was pleased with the result after hanging with the eventual winner on what Deneen saw as a much more demanding course.

“It was a really tight dual. I was really excited about the way I skied tonight,” said Deneen. “The courses were pretty uneven so to even keep it close with Bilodeau on blue line (opposite the red course) was a victory. I’m really happy with the way I’m skiing, so hopefully I can just keep it going the rest of the year.”

Deneen was happy to share Wilson’s first podium. “I’m really happy for Brad,” said Deneen. “Brad’s an awesome kid, I’m really happy for him. He’s been skiing so well for so long and for him to finally get a podium, It’s like Finally.”
