Ted Ligety, seeking his fifth national title but first in giant slalom, scorched the first run of GS on Tuesday, the final day of the 2007 Nature Valley U.S. Alpine Championships.
    Ligety, the combined winner from 2007 nationals, was fastest in the first run with a time of 1 minute, 8.98 seconds, .49 ahead of Bode Miller. Erik Fisher was third, .58 back, followed by Tim Jitloff, Andrew Weibrecht and Will Brandenburg.
    A number of top racers skied out in the first run, including 2007 slalom champ Jimmy Cochran, Steven Nyman and T.J. Lanning.
    Ligety won the slalom national titles in 2005 and 2006 and was second to Cochran this year, and he also won the combined title last year.
