German technical specialist Felix Neureuther had hoped to attend his national championships this week but will miss out due to an inflammatory response in the vertebral joints that plagued the end of his World Cup season.

The 30-year-old racer from Garmisch-Partenkirchen has battled disc problems in his back for multiple seasons, and he will now take a break from both training and skiing in order to seek full resolution before the 2015-16 season.

“The back gives me trouble for years,” said Neureuther. “In recent weeks I was increasingly confronted with limitations while skiing. I will therefore follow the advice of doctors and initially follow a six-week break to avoid winding up in the operating room.”

According to his doctors, Neureuther will then require a four month break from skiing before he can return to competitive training.

“Even if it is difficult, (Felix) must focus on the therapeutic measures and complete healing of the inflamed spinal joints. Medically he is very well looked after, and in a few weeks will prove whether the measures have been effective or whether surgery is inevitable,” said German team coach Mathias Berthold.
