Haupt, Leonard Take Halfpipe Junior National Titles
The 2011 Freestyle Junior National Championships in Steamboat Springs, Colo. kicked off yesterday with men’s and women’s halfpipe contests.
Ski&Snowboard Club Vail’s John Leonard and Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation's Hannah Haupt took home the gold belt buckles with the top scores in a best-of-two-run format.
Haupt’s second run down the Bashor Terrain Park’s 135-meter pipe netted her a 33.9-pont score that none could top. Ski&Snowboard Club Vail’s Chole Lee took the women’s silver medal with a 33.1-point second-run score ahead of Axis Freeride’s Keni Marsa in third with 32.8 points.
Leonard took the men’s crown with a second-run score of 44.6 to edge Crested Butte’s Aaron Blunck by two-tenths of a point. Leonard’s teammate Peter Crook took the bronze with a 43.9-point run.
“Leonard won the competition with his second run,” said coach Elana Chase. “He landed well on everything, grabbed all his tricks, and rode away with confidence.”
The USSA Freestyle Nationals continue today with the competitions.
