Cross Country: Russian men rule home course again

After Russians swept the men’s podium in yesterday’s World Cup cross country sprint at home in Rybinks, Russia, three more Russian men stepped up to dominate the top-three of today’s 30 km pursuit race.

The top-three Russian men all finished within a second and a half of each other after an hour and fifteen minutes on the course. Artem Zhmurko took his first career win ahead of teammates LLia Chernousov and Sergey Shiriaev in second and third, respectively. German Rene Sommerfeldt broke up the Russian party in fourth ahead of Russian Konstantin Glavatskikh in fifth.

Canadian Graham Nishikawa (17th) was the only North American to compete today.

Many of the World Cup’s top racers and all of the U.S. Team opted not to compete in Rybinks, choosing to rest and prepare for the upcoming Vancouver Games. The U.S Olympic Cross Country Team was named Jan. 19. 

On the women’s side, World Cup overall leader, Poland’s Justyna Kowalczyk polished off the 15-km women’s course with a time of 41:50.8 for her fifth World Cup victory of the season. In second place, ten seconds behind, was German Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle. Russian women then filled the remaining top-six spots led by Olga Schuchkina in third and Yulia Tchekaleva in fourth.

Kowalczyk now leads the overall World Cup standings by 286 points. Slovenia’s Petra Majdic, who didn’t race today, stands second ahead of Finn Aino-Kaisa Saarinen in third

 World Cup competition continues in Rybinsk tomorrow with team sprint races.
