Daron Rahlves caught a tip and crashed, and Erik Schlopy hooked his arm, stayed upright, but was slowed down greatly. Tom Rothrock and Jimmy Cochran failed to qualify for the second run. But Ted Ligety leaped from start number 64 to 23rd, setting himself up for a fast second run. Dane Spencer sat the race out, having tweaked the MCL in his left knee.
