With her first career super G win in St. Anton Sunday, World Cup Overall leader Tina Maze amplified an already historic season by becoming just the sixth woman to register a victory in all five alpine disciplines.

Maze, who is approaching the status of presumptive Overall winner this season, had been knocking on the door for quite some time. Over her career in super G, Maze has been on the podium nine times and earned an Olympic silver. And in December of this winter, she won the super G portion of a super combined in St. Moritz.

It didn't come easy for Maze, who beat out an elite field of racers on a rough and tough St. Anton course that had been originally designed for the men's 2001 World Championship. The bumpy conditions that had been smoothed over by heavy snowfall prior to yesterday's downhill returned to play a major role in the race.

In what is arguably the toughest test for the women this season, Maze was clearly looking for the win the moment she kicked out of the start, taking the risks necessary to topple a wicked-fast time laid down by host-nation favorite Anna Fenninger just two bibs earlier.

At that point, Fenninger was nearly a second up on the next-best time of Lindsey Vonn, and the Austrian crowd was certainly optimistic about the prospect of a national win. But Maze, just barely hanging on at times, skied a gutsy run to take the lead by four-hundredths of a second. Moments later, Fabienne Suter, of Switzerland, swept through with a competitive effort to knock Vonn off the podium by a mere hundredth of a second.  

For Vonn — who returned to racing this weekend after a nearly monthlong hiatus and was hoping to make it 3-3 in super G this season — there was a clear improvement in her energy and aggressiveness compared to Saturday's downhill. The four-time Overall champ appeared steady where others were shaky. She took the risks necessary to stay competitive and on at least one occasion recovered from trouble to take the lead at that point in the race.

But Maze and Fenninger were in a league of their own. The Austrian, who started immediately after Vonn, was aerodynamic, aggressive and ultimately able to take a massive chunk out of the American's time.

"I was a little disappointed to be one-hundredth off the podium," said Vonn, who was in high spirits after the race. "I definitely know where I can make up the time. On the bottom of the course I was a little passive. I wasn't quite as clean as I should have been on some of the left-footed turns. But in general my skiing was solid, I'm right there. I just need to be a little bit more aggressive."

As for defending the Overall title, Vonn said what most other people have been thinking: "It's amazing to see [Maze] do so well. She's been on a roll — top three in every event. She's clearly running away with the overall. It's cool to watch. I think it's great for the sport, and I'm really happy for her."

Running a bit later in the pack, Julia Mancuso skied to one of her better results this season. Mancuso raced a competitive top section, but lost time prior to the crucial Icefall section and at one point wound up skiing in the soft snow. But she was able to quickly recover and survive toward the finish for a sixth-place result.

On the whole, it was decent day for the U.S. women's speed team, of which we have come to expect so much this winter. Laurenne Ross was the next-best performer in 17th — she just didn't ski quite clean enough to break into the top 10. Stacey Cook was 25th, Leanne Smith 36th and Saturday's downhill winner, Alice McKennis, who was not aided by a strong start position in this super G, skied to 39th. Abbey Ghent was a DNF.
