Defending World downhill champion Erik Guay of Canada will face an uphill battle to repeat after undergoing a knee scope that is expected to sideline him six weeks and curtail his pre-season training.

It is reported a fall in Portillo several weeks ago didn't at first appear to be a problem, but the knee he damaged in a 2003 fall began to swell after the fact and Guay visited his surgeon after returning to Canada. It was decided to clean up the knee by removing particles.

Guay is expected to miss the planned Canadian training session in Tignes, France and a second speed camp in Colorado just ahead of the season. The 2010 World Cup super G champion is not expected to miss any competitions at this time and should be able to return for the Lake Louise races at the end of November.
