Shaun White arrested for public intoxication and vandalism
Snowboarding and skateboarding icon Shaun White was arrested for public intoxication and vandalism in Nashville, Tenn. early Sunday morning (Sep. 16) after causing damage at a hotel and reportedly being involved in an altercation with a hotel guest.
According to reports, the two-time Olympic gold medalist drunkenly destroying a phone at the hotel and was later treated at a hospital for a head injury. According to a police statement, White (26) "appeared to be extremely intoxicated and smelled strongly of alcohol."
ESPN.com reports that officers were called to the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel at 2 a.m. Sunday after a man fitting White’s description triggered a fire alarm, forcing the hotel to evacuate all guests.
White attempted to flee the scene in a taxi but was stopped by a guest who informed the driver that police were on the way. Police reported that White, a 24-time X Games medalist, then kicked at the man and took off running before falling and hitting his head on a fence.
According to police, White refused to sign misdemeanor citations. "He basically put himself in jail by not signing that," a police source told ESPN.com.
White was arrested on Monday after being released from the hospital. He has a court date set for Oct. 10.
