Manninen takes nordic combined World Cup in Lahti
After finishing second yesterday, Finn Hannu Manninen won a nordic combined World Cup competition today (March 6) at home in Lahti, Finland. It was the 31-year-old's third World Cup victory of the season and his 48th career win.
"This was my last race in this season, and I have to say that it was really amazing for me," said Manninen. "I achieved unbelievable results in the last months, three victories, two second places - I enjoyed every moment.
Austrian Felix Gottwald took second place ahead of this season's overall title winner, Jason Lamy Chappuis of France, Olympic gold medalist in the normal hill event. Chappuis sealed the overall globe with a tenth-place finish in yesterday's competition after winning six World Cup races this season.
Today's jumping competition was cancelled due to strong winds, forcing officials to use results from Thursday's provisional round.
"I had a great season, and I have had a lot of fun today. When you compete in the yellow bib, it is easier to give all what you have," said Lamy Chappuis. "A Gold medal victory at the Olympic Winter Games gives a lot of emotions, winning the overall World Cup means that you are consistent through the whole season. It is more difficult to win the crystal globe."
After finishing 12th in the jumping portion, Manninen overcame a 45-second penalty to grab the third-fastest time on the cross country track and take the lead after the first lap. Gottwald was the fastest cross country skier of the day and fought all the way back from a one minute 32 second penalty to his second-place finish.
Austrian Mario Stecher was just off the podium in fourth ahead of yesterday's winner, Magnus Moan of Norway in fifth.
American's Nick Hendrickson led the U.S. squad in 40th. Teammates Taylor and Bryan Fletcher followed in 41st and 43rd, while Alexander Miller took 45th.
American Olympians Bill Demong, Johnny Spillane, Todd Lodwick and Brett Camerota did not compete today.
