Aspen’s Sky Kelsey awarded Faster Skier Scholarship
Ski Racing Development (SRD), World Cup Supply (WCS) and Shred Optics announced Saturday (June 30) that the 2012 “Fast Skier” Junior Alpine Scholarship Fund was awarded to Sky Kelsey of Aspen, Colo.
“A J3 (U16) athlete out of the Aspen Valley Ski Club (AVSC), Kelsey has not only posted winning results on the race course, but also exemplifies many of the individual characteristics that the award represents: exceptional academic achievement, widespread community involvement, and incredible drive and focus as an athlete,” read a release from the benefactors.
Sky made the J3 Rocky/Central Junior Nationals as a first seed for the RMD and won the downhill and super G as well as placing second in the slalom, third in the GS and winning the overall title. He is also an accomplished musician, at the awards banquet Kelsey entertained the crowd with his guitar, mandolin and fiddle. Kelsey aslo went to the National U16 Assessment Camp in Park City, Utah and won the dual GS and was second in the slalom. He also won the Skills Quest competition.
As the recipient of the fourth annual Scholarship award, Kelsey will receive $1,500.00, an Athlete’s pack and a 2013 speed suit from SRD, a winter Start coat from WCS, and a Shred race helmet and goggle package.
“Year after year the quality of applicants reinforce the growing significance of this Scholarship,” said Barry Levinson of SRD. “We have never heard such glowing and positive recommendations from both coaches and others outside of the ski racing community. Sky’s passion for the sport, sportsmanship and dedication as well as his scholastic and musical talents made him a natural for this years award.”
