Kershaw claims sprint, Randall third

A sold out crowd packed the small stadium and lined the course of the Szklarska Poreba, Poland World Cup sprint saw Canadian Devon Kershaw blaze up the finish to pass Russian Nikolay Morilov in the final meter for the win and his second straight sprint podium. He moved into third place in the World Cup overall standings.

American Kikkan Randall ousted local favorite Justyna Kowalczyk in the opening heat and had a crash right at the start of the final. She got up and charged her way to the lead but dropped to third in a close finish. She missed second by a ski tip to Norway's Maiken Casperen Falla with Ida Ingemarsdotter getting her second career win.

Randall has a 129pt lead for the sprint crown with three March classic competitions remaining. She is fourth overall behind Marit Bjoergen, Kowalczyk and Therese Johaug.

Casperesen Falla said she thought she had been third across the finish. “I have not won many so close finishes, so I am happy with my last meters of the competition.”

Randall said the atmosphere at the Polish race site was great, and vowed to do her best to hang on to the red bib as sprint leader. “I am getting quite attached to the red bid so I hope I will keep it.”

Kershaw he had waited to the final straight to make his move. “The final straight is a little bit uphill and that suits me well. I was not thinking much and was just trying to ski as fast as I could.”
