Skiing competition at the 2012 Winter X Games wrapped up in Aspen, Colo. today (Jan. 29) as skier cross racers Chris Del Bosco of Vail, and Norway’s Marte Gjefsen took the gold medals.  

Del Bosco, who now skis for his father’s native Canada, relied on his eight years of X Games experience and skill to take gold.
 
“It’s amazing, this is my favorite event,” Del Bosco said. “I have had an up and down season and this one was the big one on my list. So to come in and grab gold is pretty special.”
 
Del Bosco struggled at the start of the race but relied on his experience to move through the field and gain the top spot midway through. From there, he held off his competitors and crossed the finish line with the field behind them.
 
The next competitor to cross the finish line was Solvenia’s Filip Flisar who won the first Winter X Games medal for his country. Del Bosco’s Team Canada teammate Dave Duncan took the bronze.

American ski cross pioneer and two-time X Game gold medalist Casey Puckett, 39, finished fifth. 
 
On the Women’s side, Gjefsen came to Buttermilk Mountain with casts on both hands, but she didn’t let that deter her, as she raced down the mountain, avoided accidents and took gold.
 
“With my hands, I had trouble with the start,” Gjefsen said. “I had to trust my gliding skills and pass the other girls further down the coarse and that's what happened in the final. I knew I had to stay focused down the coarse, after I hit the last jump I realized I was going to win this. I'm just so happy."
 
Her fellow countrywoman, Hedda Berntsen followed her across the finish line for silver. Berntsen also took the silver in the event in 2008.
 
Australia’s Jenny Owens finished third, taking home the bronze – her first Winter X Games medal.
