Professional big mountain skier Jamie Pierre of Big Sky, Mont. was killed yesterday (Nov 13.) by an avalanche near Snowbird Resort in Utah’s Little Cottonwood Canyon.

Pierre was snowboarding with a friend in the area, which has still yet to open for the season. No avalanche control work had been done in the area.

According to authorities, Pierre triggered a 16-inche deep, 200-foot wide slide that swept him over a rocky cliff near the area’s Gad Valley. Pierre was not buried by the slide.

Pierre, 39, has stared in many ski films and established a world record in 2006, when he jumped off a 255-foot cliff in Grand Targhee Resort.

The Utah Avalanche Forecast Center warned of dangerous conditions in the area throughout the week.
