Ski Racing Contributor Bill McCollom Honored by VARA Hall of Fame
Regular Ski Racing Magazine contributor Bill McCollom will be inducted into the Vermont Alpine Racing Association’s (VARA) Hall of Fame Nov. 5, honoring the Vermont native for his long time participation and dedication to ski racing in the state and for his continued guidance and support to the athletes involved.
McCollom has a long history with Vermont ski racing at every level. His mother, Connie, was very active working with the Woodstock Ski Runners. As a youngster, McCollom grew up skiing and racing in the Mid Vermont Council from Suicide Six and as a club member of the Woodstock Ski Runners. He was competitive with peers on the Mid Vermont State Team with VARA Hall of Famers such as Harry Ryan and Rick Chaffee.
McCollom has stayed active in Vermont ski racing since graduating from Middlebury College. In 1971, VARA was founded and McCollom served on its board in 1976, becoming it's Executive Director in 1980. He also helped found Killington Mountain School, where he was the Academic Director and ran the racing program in the late 70s. He returned to Killington Mountain School in 1988 where he assisted in creating many success stories. In 1998 Bill began his career writing for Ski Racing Magazine, where he continues to write creative stories that often feature his beloved Vermont.
In a volunteer role, McCollom led the eastern region as the Eastern Alpine Competition Committee Chair person. This role, while voluntary, held utmost importance. Bill became the face and leader of eastern ski racing and link to the national governing body, USSA.
McCollom is currently giving back to the local Woodstock Community by coaching the Woodstock Union High School Ski Team. He keeps his competitive juices flowing by competing on the NE Masters circuit. McCollom also dabbles in some acting on stage and has had roles in many productions that play at Pentangle in Woodstock, Vermont.
McCollom will be inducted into the Hall at the Vermont Celebration of Ski Racing Gala Nov. 5 at the Quechee Club in Quechee, Vermont. For more information contact the VARA Office at Julie@vara.org.
